FAQ

Getting Started

What is Motion Texture?

Motion Texture makes animated paper textures for video editors and motion designers. Each texture is built from up to ten separate sheets of paper, photographed one at a time, rather than a single image being moved around with keyframes.

What software can I use these textures in?

Almost anything that takes video or image files. After Effects, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Cavalry, and image editors like Photoshop. Drag and drop, no plugins needed.

One thing worth knowing if you use Cavalry: it doesn't support TIFF, so the still images in the 8K pack won't import there. The videos work at every resolution, and the HD and 4K stills are fine.

Do I need any special plugins?

Nope. Just video editing software. Drag and drop them into your timeline to use as backgrounds or overlays.

What's included in each pack?

Every pack has 12 animated textures, 12 still versions, and the After Effects template.

The formats change by resolution. HD gives you MP4 video and JPG stills. 4K gives you ProRes 422 MOV files and PNG stills. 8K gives you ProRes 422 MOV files and TIFF stills. The template needs After Effects 24 or newer.

What resolutions are available?

HD, 4K and 8K. The download is 716 MB for HD, 1.98 GB for 4K and 8.45 GB for 8K.

Buying a higher resolution gets you the lower ones too, so if you buy 8K you also have 4K and HD.

Using Animated Textures

How do I overlay textures onto my videos?

Three ways, depending on how much control you want.

Quickest: use the included After Effects template. Drop your footage into the Insert Media Here composition and it comes out with the whole effect applied, blending, ink bleed, frame rate and all.

Most control: build the overlay yourself with multiple layers, effects and blending modes. The Premiere Pro walkthrough on the tutorials page covers this method start to finish.

Simplest: drop a texture straight onto your timeline as a background, or lay it over a clip and set the blending mode, Multiply for white paper and Screen for black. Works in any editing software.

Do the textures loop?

Yes, seamlessly. Each texture is up to ten unique frames, and every single frame is a separate sheet of paper. Once it reaches the end it loops back, so you can stretch one texture across a shot of any length without it looking repetitive.

What frame rate are they?

They're shot and sequenced at 6 frames per second, which is what gives them the stop motion feel instead of looking like smooth video.

If you want it faster, just change the speed of the texture clip. Play it at 2x and you're running at 12 frames per second.

How do these compare to other animated textures?

Most animated textures are one image with position keyframes faking the movement, so the motion reads as artificial pretty quickly.

These are up to ten different sheets of paper, each photographed separately and sequenced at 6 frames per second. The variation is real texture, not a still image sliding around.

What does the After Effects template do?

It applies the whole effect for you. Drop your footage into the Insert Media Here composition and it comes out with a printed on paper look.

From there you can change which of the 12 textures you're using, the frame rate, the background color, how far you zoom into the paper, how strong the highlights and shadows are, ink bleed, roughen edges, wiggle, and brightness and contrast.

It comes with every pack, including the Free Sample. Watch the walkthrough.

Purchasing & Downloads

What's the difference between the Free Sample and the paid packs?

The Free Sample is one animated texture in 4K, plus the After Effects template. The paid packs each have 12 textures in up to 8K, with the still versions included.

See the Classic Paper Pack.

Which license do I need?

Individual is for one person, so solo editors, freelancers and individual creators. Team covers a single team of up to 10 people at one company. Studio covers an entire organization, any number of employees.

All three allow unlimited personal and commercial work, including paid client projects, for as long as you like. Full licensing details.

Can I use these in commercial projects?

Yes. Every license covers unlimited commercial use, including client work, television and commercials.

What you can't do is resell them, share the raw files with anyone outside your license, upload them elsewhere, put them in templates or asset libraries you distribute, use them to build competing products, or train AI models on them.
